Equestrian Undies: The Life-Changing Garment.

*GASP*  Is that a pair of underwear you see on your screen?

These undies are more beautiful than they first appear.

These undies are more beautiful than they first appear.

Why, yes it is. Don’t laugh because these undies can save your life (or at least your seat).  I’m not sure why I had never heard of equestrian underwear when I started riding. They were a mysterious product that lurked in the shadows, just waiting for the opportunity to help someone.

I suppose I didn’t recognize my need for them right away. But as my training progressed and I began to spend more hours in the saddle, I noticed that I was, what’s the word? I was SENSITIVE after some longer rides, especially those that involved a lot of sitting trot. I also had switched horses, which meant switching saddles. I barely fit into the borrowed saddle, and since the horse is leased, I didn’t want to lay out a big chunk of change to buy a new one.  I told myself that if he was happy in the saddle, then I would be. Except, my seat wasn’t happy sometimes. Saddle sore is a real thing, let me tell you, and padded underwear can help.

Sitting well is easier if your seat is happy!

I can’t remember what turned me onto pursuing these comfortable undergarments, but once I discovered their existence, my research turned into high gear!  I found my current Equetech pair online at Riding Warehouse, but know they (and other brands) can be found elsewhere. The first ride in my padded seat was a tremendous relief, and I am hooked!

Now let me warn you, they are not cute. These are no sexy pair of underwear, but if being sexy was based on function, they would be at the top of the heap!  A few practical notes here…there are several different styles. I have been happy with the $25 padded dressage briefs made in Britain from Equetech Equestrian Underwear. Hand-washing and hang-drying are recommended, but admittedly, mine have seen the inside of a washing machine and dryer. Who has time to hand-wash??

I hope this exposure about an avoided topic is helpful to you. We all wish our seats were light enough that padded underwear wouldn’t be necessary. Until then, these beauties can really save your hide! ;)
